Death Cab For Cutie cover Yoko Ono’s ‘Waiting For The Sunrise’

Death Cab For Cutie have shared a cover of Yoko Ono’s “Waiting For The Sunrise.”

Over the last few months, frontman Ben Gibbard has been compiling a tribute album called Ocean Child: Songs Of Yoko Ono, out February 18th. The forthcoming collection is set to feature covers of Yoko Ono from Sharon Van Etten, the Flaming Lips, and more.

Today, Gibbard has previewed the collection with Death Cab For Cutie’s cover of “Waiting For The Sunrise.” The track comes from Ono’s 1973 double album, Approximately Infinite Universe. Death Cab’s rendition of the track stays pretty true to the original, with Gibbard’s vocals adding a distinctive Death Cab twist.

Ben Gibbard is a longtime fan of Yoko Ono, and often cites her as a key influence. He says the project was “born out of both love and frustration.”

“The ‘love’ part is pretty obvious,” Gibbard continues. “It is the seemingly bottomless well of inspiration and enjoyment Yoko Ono’s music has provided me and I must assume everyone else present here on this compilation. The ‘frustration’ part, on the other hand, goes back decades.”

In addition to “Waiting For The Sunrise,” Ocean Child: Songs Of Yoko Ono features two previously released covers. One of those is Yo La Tengo’s “Who Has Seen The Wind” and the other is Japanese Breakfast’s “Nobody Sees Me Like You Do.”
