Deerhoof have returned to announce their 18th studio album, Actually, You Can, out October 22nd via Joyful Noise Recordings. Alongside the announcement, they’ve shared an animated video for their new single “Department of Correction.”
The new single is about “all the marvellous mysteries of life that don’t add up on a ledger sheet or figure into an AI algorithm,” Deerhoof explain. “It’s about Judas going electric. It’s about how the human species itself is meaningless without a planet to live on. How we vastly outnumber our would-be masters if only we could get organized.”
The gritty, futuristic tune revolves around experimental, cyclical instrumentals. With wailing guitars and distorted percussion, this captivating track is sure to grab your attention. It also has some silky, unique vocal lines that give the dark tune a bubbly edge. The accompanying animated video sees Deerhoof almost paper-like, making their way around in a pink floral convertible.

“Think of all the beauty, positivity and love that gets deemed ugly, negative and hateful by the self-proclaimed guardians of ‘common sense,'” Deerhoof explain of the album. “We’d hardly be destroying society by dismantling their colonial economics and prisons and gender roles and aesthetics. We’d be creating it!”
Actually, You Can follows the release of their recent album, Future Teenage Cave Artists. Last year, they also put out Love-Lore, where they covered 43 songs in just 35 minutes.
