A24 has released the first trailer for Joel Coen’s Shakespeare adaptation, The Tragedy of Macbeth.
The film, which is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival in September, is shot entirely in black-and-white. The Tragedy of Macbeth stars Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. Just like in the famous Shakespearean play, Washington and McDormand will plot for power over Scotland as they slowly descend into madness.
The new preview for The Tragedy of Macbeth is quite eerie. With clips of circling black birds interspersed throughout the trailer, this unnerving video is sure to put you on edge. The only dialogue in the footage is from a witch’s voice, delivering the famed line, “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”

Alongside Washington and McDormand, the cast will boast big names like Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram, Brendan gleeson, Harry Melling, and Ralph Ineson.
The Tragedy of Macbeth marks Coen’s solo directorial debut. It serves as the first time Joel or Ethan have lead a project without the other.
After premiering at the New York Film Festival, the movie will debut in theatres on December 25th and on Apple TV Plus on January 14th.
