Disney Delays ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ Indefinitely

Marvel, Disney search for new director

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 has been placed on hold as Marvel and Disney regroup around the planned film. Principal photography was set to being in early winter 2019, but the dismissal of writer-director James Gunn has put the project in a state limbo.

Gunn was fired by Disney in July after years-old tweets resurfaced in which Gunn was making jokes about wholly unfunny topics such as pedophilia and rape. While no one’s arguing that Gunn’s jokes were not in incredibly poor taste, but the manner in which they were brought to light has had a polarizing effect.

Gunn’s tweets resurfaced when alt-right social media personality Mike Cernovich engaged in a bout of concern-trolling with Disney, effectively prompting the company to reconsider its ties to Gunn. Cernovich himself has “joked” about rape in the past, tweeting things like “Date rape does not exist” and worse. Many have declared Cernovich’s run at Gunn to be in poor faith.

Guardians star Dave Bautista has not held back in his efforts to get Disney/Marvel to rehire Gunn. The former WWE wrestler has shared numerous pro-Gunn articles and taken shots at Cernovich and his sycophants via social media.

Disney has not commented on the state of the franchise. Stars Chris Pratt, Bautista, and Zoe Saldana are all scheduled to appear in next spring’s yet-to-be-titled Avengers film.

Some might call this Donald Trump’s America, but it appears a six-time WWE champion is its moral centre… so there’s that.
