Disney detail forthcoming streaming service Disney Plus, aim to challenge Netflix dominance

The service will launch featuring 'Moana,' 'Captain Marvel,' 30 seasons of 'The Simpsons' and more

Walt Diney Co. has detailed their family-friendly streaming service, and it sees the company aiming to challenge Netflix’s streaming dominance.

When it launches in the United States on November 12th, Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus, is set to cost $6.99 USD per month, as opposed to Netflix’s $13 per month. Additionally, Disney Plus’ focus narrows in on family-friendly shows and films, featuring programming from the Star Wars galaxy, the National Geographic channel, the Marvel universe, and Pixar animation.

According to CBC, Disney made a presentation to Wall Street analysts in California with a video showcasing its expansive repertoire, featuring clips from classic television shows and flicks like Frozen, The Sound of Music, and The Lion King. Allegedly, the company already has deals with Roku Inc and Sony Corp to distribute Disney Plus across streaming devices and console gaming systems, with the service widely available on smart TVs, tablets, and more by the time it launches.

The company’s heads see opportunities in taking ESPN+ sport streaming to Latin America, and international expansion of its Hulu streaming service, which is targeted to adults. Not only is Disney trying to move from a cable television leader to a streaming service giant, but Chief Executive Bob Iger even stated that streaming was Disney’s “No. 1 priority,” according to CBC.

Wall Street analysts expect that the new service would cost approximately $7.50 US monthly, bring in approximately 7.2 million US subscribers in 2020 and 13.66 million by 2021, according to a poll conducted by Reuters.

Not only has Disney+ been purchasing assets from 21st Century Fox, gaining films and TV shows like Avatar, but the programming will also draw on Disney’s library of classic family films and some Disney films, like the Lady and the Tramp remake, will go directly onto the app upon release. Ultimately, Disney+ is set to launch with 400 movies and 7,500 television episodes, including Moana, Aladdin, Captain Marvel, 30 seasons of The Simpsons, and more.
