Disney+ restores ‘The Simpsons’ back to its proper 4:3 aspect ratio

The entire The Simpsons cartoon archive was available to stream for the first time ever when Disney+ launched in November, but fans of the series were not exactly in a jovial mood when it was clear the aspect ratio for nearly all 20 seasons was remastered to a 16:9 widescreen format.

The decision to upscale the aspect ratio to 16:9 has resulted in many iconic images appearing stretched, and in some cases the show’s subtle jokes have been affected. For instance, the 16:9 aspect ratio inadvertently killed the classic joke that Duff, Duff Lite, and Duff Dry beer all come from the same vat.

Fans can rest easy and enjoy the classic episodes as they were meant to be viewed, as Disney+ has finally reverted episodes to their natural 4:3 aspect ratio.

Viewers have the option to choose between 4:3 and 16:9, but if you want to relive some of the series’ best moments, you’ll want to opt for 4:3.
