The Internet has been following Facebook‘s experiment with the ‘like’ button with much anticipation. Finally the site’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox has confirmed that in addition to the infamous ‘like’ button, Facebook users will have the option to react to posts with ‘angry’, ‘sad’, ‘wow’, ‘haha’ or ‘love’ emoticons. By simply holding down the ‘like’ option users will have the ability to choose from the icons below:
An additional ‘yay’ that was employed for testing in 6 different countries, did not make the cut for Facebook’s 6 reactions as it was not “universally understood.”
The newest reactions were deployed by a team of sociologists who analyzed the most common reactions to Facebook posts. The alternative to the ‘like’ button was the obvious ‘dislike’ button, was rejected on the grounds it would create too much negativity on the social media site. The emoticons will be available to Facebook users worldwide within the next couple weeks.
