Josh Tillman took to Jimmy Kimmel Live! to play his Father John Misty track, “Buddy’s Rendezvous.”
The track comes from his most recent album, Chloë and the Next 20th Century. Introduced by comedian Nicole Byer, Father John Misty took to the stage and transformed it into what felt like a smooth jazz club. This rendition of “Buddy’s Rendezvous” is even more orchestral and cinematic than the album version.
Backed by a full musical ensemble, including a piano, a saxophone, and a full string quartet, Tillman was free to perform sans-instrument. Thus, his vocals stood at the center, as he delivered lines like, “Whatever happened to the girl I knew?/ In the wasteland, come up short and end up on the news.”

Recently, Lana Del Rey shared her own cover of “Buddy’s Rendezvous.” Father John Misty teased a clip of the cover back in May, but after being only available on a 7-inch single, it’s now out on streaming services. Alongside the cover, FJM has shared a brand new video for the track. Del Rey’s take on the tune is so distinct it feels like it could be her own, as she delivers lines like, “What’s the point of being everybody’s girl?/ Maybe you think that way there’s no chance getting hurt.”
