Father John Misty delivers orchestral performance of ‘Kiss Me (I Loved You)’

Father John Misty took to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (May 4th), where he performed “Kiss Me (I Loved You).”

Josh Tillman has been out promoting his new Father John Misty album, Chloë And The Next 20th Century, and last night’s performance was his most recent stop. For “Kiss Me (I Loved You),” Tillman was backed by a huge orchestral band, who brought the retro, cinematic arrangements to the stage.

Throughout the performance, Tillman delivered the devastating, melancholic storytelling of the track with ease. He delivered lines like, “I heard everything about you/ And maybe half of it was true/ Love is much less a mystery/ Than who you give it to.”

Father John Misty recorded the new album with Jonathan Wilson. The record comes packed with lush strings, brass, and woodwinds performed by Dan Higgins and Wayne Bergeron. Arrangements are from Drew Erickson. Ultimately, Chloë and the Next 20th Century has more of a cinematic edge than the rest of Tillman’s repertoire.

The 11-track album is a stunning, orchestral soundscape with retro sensibilities. Throughout the record, Tillman channels his quintessential dreamlike lyricism, making for some fun-loving, surreal stories.

In addition to “Kiss Me (I Loved You),” Chloë and the Next 20th Century features singles like “Funny Girl,” “Q4,” and “Goodbye Mr. Blue.”
