Father John Misty has shared “Funny Girl,” the first single from his forthcoming album, Chloë and the Next 20th Century.
Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) teased the record last month with a spoken-word vinyl sent to fans. Now, he’s detailed the upcoming record, which is out on April 8th via Sub Pop and Bella Union. Today’s preview, “Funny Girl,” is a lush, cinematic piano ballad. Tillman’s quintessential croons take the lead as the track swells into a romantic, orchestral anthem. Lyrically, Tillman delivers lines like, “Funny girl, your schedule’s pretty crazy/ Doing interviews for the new live action Cathy.”
The accompanying video is directed by Nicholas Ashe Bateman. Tillman doesn’t appear in the sepia-toned clip. Instead, it follows a jellyfish floating across a dust-ridden landscape, followed by a tornado.

Father John Misty recorded Chloë and the Next 20th Century with Jonathan Wilson. The record comes packed with lush strings, brass, and woodwinds performed by Dan Higgins and Wayne Bergeron. Arrangements are from Drew Erickson. It’s no wonder that the first preview of the album, “Funny Girl,” has more of a cinematic edge than the rest of Tillman’s repertoire.
