Director Todd Phillips has shared a first look of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker in the forthcoming origin film named after the Batman villain. Phoenix is seen wearing an army green jacket and with long hair, but no signs of the villain’s makeup.
Phillips captioned the photo on Instagram with “Arthur.” Phillips previously indicated that Phoenix’s Joker character’s real name in the film would be Arthur Fleck. Have a look at the actor as the Joker below.
Production on the film began in New York earlier this month. The film has a purported $55 million budget, which effectively indicates that it will be more of a gritty approach to storytelling, and less reliant on special effects.
Phillips is best known for his directorial work on films such as Old School, The Hangover and its two sequels, and War Dogs.
