Foo Fighters perform medley at MTV VMAs, accept Global Icon Award

Last night (September 12th) at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Foo Fighters accepted the Global Icon Award. The iconic band also performed a medley of some of their hit tunes.

The award “celebrates an artist/band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond. The VMAs will honor the global icon who has left an indelible mark on the musical landscape and continues to influence, inspire, and evolve.”

Usually, the Global Icon Award is presented at the MTV EMAs, but this was the first time ever it was awarded at the VMAs. Foo Fighters join previous award recipients like Queen, Whitney Houston, Green Day, and more. In addition to receiving the Global Icon Award, Foo Fighters performed a medley of “Learning to Fly,” “Shame Shame,” and “Everlong.”

Foo Fighters performed at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, as they ran through a medley of their 1999, 2021, and 1997 tunes. On stage, a screen showed images spanning Foo Fighters’ epic career.

When introducing the band, Billie Eilish says, “they put their hearts into every single song and leave it on the stage every single time” and “they’re officially global icons.”

During his Global Icon Award acceptance speech, frontman Dave Grohl thanked those at “MTV past and present.” “It’s quite an award to receive – we’ve been a band for 26 years, so it feels pretty good!” Grohl then went on to say “we’ll see ya in 26 years.”
