Freshly Pressed

New long plays from Broken Bells, Against Me!, Mogwai, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Young the Giant, and Bombay Bicycle Club.

Freshly Pressed is a monthly feature highlighting interesting and noteworthy album releases.

We’re well into 2014 and some of the new records we’ve patiently been on “stand-by” for are finally starting to drop. Here is a look at a few of them we are excited about.
Against Me!Against Me!Transgender Dysphoria Blues | iTunes
Many were curious to see how the band would sound after Tom Gabel had his transgender operation to become Laura Jane Grace. Critics and fans speculated that the hormones could have dramatically changed the singers voice from the raspy punk notes that we are used too. It turned out that Laura Jane Grace and Tom Gabel’s voices would be pretty much identical, and the only influence the sex change had on the record would be the lyrics.

This album tips the scales in favour of the Jicks, as they now have 6 albums with Malkmus to Pavement’s 5. It’s been somewhat of a lengthy wait for this record, with their last LP coming out in 2011. Any time Malkmus is releasing new music it’s sure to generate some buzz. Pitchfork gave the record 7/10, but what do you think?

So Long See You TomorrowBombay Bicycle ClubSo Long, See You Tomorrow | iTunes
With each new record form Bombay Bicycle Club, they continue to evolve their sound. On February 3rd we were given a new LP from Bombay Bicycle Club entitled So Long, See You Tomorrow. It’s the first album to come from the group since their 2011 release, A Different Kind Of Fix, which had more of an upbeat dance feel to it, this album is notably different. They’ve now been compared to Animal Collective by NME, but we’ll let you make your own comparisons. They’ll be here in Toronto on May 3rd.

After their successful and infectious self titled debut album, the band decided to switch labels from Roadrunner to Fueled by Rahmen. Mind Over Matter picks right back up where the guys left off, adding a little more energy and grit to a sound that had already pleased fans. Catch them in Toronto March 7th.

Two super talented guys making another album together, it’s hard not to be excited. Producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse and Shins frontman James Mercer combine their powers on the new Broken Bells album, After the Disco. Originally the album was set for a release date in January but it was pushed back a few weeks. The beats of Danger Mouse mixed with the infectious falsetto from James Mercer, make this album a must have. Catch them at the Danforth Music Hall March 3rd.

It’s been about 3 years since Mogwai put out their last album Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. In October of last year the group revealed they would be releasing their 8th studio album Rave Tapes in early 2014. The wait is over and the album was released on January 20th, and though the guys are getting a little older, their music is just as energetic as ever. They’ll be here at the Danforth Music Hall May 13th.
