After releasing his first record since 2012’s Coyote, Matt Mays returned to the studio to re-work his 2017 effort, Once Upon a Hell of a Time, in its entirety. Mays stripped all 13 songs back to their roots, and then released Twice Upon a Hell of a Time in October of 2018 as an acoustic album.
Mays recently sat down with Indie88 at Baldwin Street Sound, the studio where he recorded the acoustic record. He spoke about the process of initially writing most of the songs on his treasured 1967 Gibson J-45, then building them up for Once Upon a Hell of a Time before stripping them back down for its companion release.
From the internal debate over whether to take his vintage pieces on the road, to the first riff he learned to play, Matt Mays talks all things gear in the latest episode of Gearheads.
Gearheads is presented with Cosmo Music.
