The melodica is a small handheld keyboard you play by blowing through a mouthpiece while holding keys down. It is also without question, one of the hardest instruments in the world to look cool while playing.
Below are 5 big songs featuring great melodica.
Stars – “Your Ex-Lover is Dead”
Torquil Campbell pulls out the melodica in a number of Stars songs. It sounds surprisingly fitting with all the horns and string instruments in this song.
Gorillaz – “Clint Eastwood”
Damon Albarn has been adding melodica to his music for years with Blur and Gorillaz. This song got its name from the melodica riff played throughout that they thought sounded like music that would be in “A Fistful of Dollars”. Because of that, they called it “Clint Eastwood”.
Oasis – “Champagne Supernova”
I never noticed, but the melodica is one of the most prominent instruments during the verses of this song that went #1 in multiple countries.
Cake – “The Distance”
It sounds more like a keyboard, but Cake are shown playing a melodica late in this music video.
R.E.M. – “Boy in the Well”
R.E.M. shows off their melodica chops in this song, playing a giant solo and making the crowd go absolutely nothing because it’s a melodica and not a guitar.
Honourable mention goes out to Blackstreet’s “Don’t Leave Me” because the melodica solo in this song is probably the main reason it was a hit.
