I just downloaded the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack and found this gem by Rupert Holmes. I always knew the song existed but never listened to the lyrics closely from beginning to end. It’s a beautiful story about a man and his “lady”. He reads a message in the personal ads and responds even though he is in a relationship. What happens in the third verse is beautiful. The song inspired this list of great storyteller songs.

I grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan so I am very familiar with the David Milgaard story. Milgaard was wrongfully convicted of murdering a nurse and spent more than 20 years in jail for a crime he did not commit.
Bob Dylan – “Hurricane”
Here is another story about a man who was wrongfully convicted of a crime. Boxer Rubin Carter was convicted of a triple murder in New Jersey. After his release, he moved to Toronto and was the Executive Director of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC) from 1993 until 2005. He died in April this year.
Gordon Lightfoot – “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald sunk in a Lake Superior storm. All 29 members of the crew died.
