Grouper’s atmospheric new album ‘Shade’ was recorded over 15 years

Liz Harris is back with her new album as Grouper, Shade, out now via Kranky.

The new album was reportedly recorded over a whopping 15 years. Harris took to California’s Mount Tamalpais for the recording sessions. More recently, Harris continued to work on the Grouper tunes while recording in Astoria.

The atmospheric collection is sure to be a DIY-underground classic. Packed with murky, spectral tunes, you’ll find yourself revisiting the album again and again. Despite being recorded over 15 years, these songs all fit together perfectly.

According to a release, Shade is full of “respite, and the coast, poetically and literally.”

The new album marks Grouper’s first new release since 2018’s Grid of Points. Serving as her 11th full-length album under the moniker, the 12-track album marks a stunning return for Harris. Although Grid of Points was Harris’ last album as Grouper, she did release a Nivhek album a year later.

Shade features previously released singles “Ode To The Blue” and “Unclean Mind.”
