Guy Ritchie to helm forthcoming live-action ‘Hercules’ remake

There’s a live-action remake of Hercules in the works.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guy Ritchie is set to direct a remake based on the beloved 1997 Disney film. Ritchie previously directed the 2019 live-action Aladdin movie, and now he’s set to take on Hercules as well. The Aladdin remake crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

The forthcoming remake serves as the latest installation in a whole slew of live-action Disney films. Marc Webb is currently working on directing a retelling of Snow White starring Rachel Zegler in the titular role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.

Melissa McCarthey, Halle Bailey, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, and Javier Bardem will also star in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. “After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” director Rob Marshall said of casting Halle Bailey as Ariel.

Alongside Guy Ritchie, Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) wrote a first draft of the Hercules script. Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War) will produce the film through their AGBO banner.

The original 1997 Hercules was directed by Ron Clements and Jon Musker. The film was a musical retelling of the Greek legend where the titular hero, voiced by Tate Donovan, has to save Olympus from Hades, voiced by James Woods. It’s not yet been announced whether this new live-action version will be a musical as well.
