Sister trio HAIM have shared an updated 2021 cover of Adam Sandler’s “The Hanukkah Song.”
Adam Sandler appeared on the Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live in 1994 to sing of the lack of Hanukkah songs in pop culture. Now, Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim have created their own updated version. On Friday (December 3rd), they uploaded a video of the cover on Twitter. The clip sees Este taking on lead vocals, while Alana and Danielle sing backup.
In the clip, HAIM give “Hanukkah Song” some new lyrics. They sing of current celebrities like Doja Cat and Timothée Chalamet. In a very 2021 twist, they even add in some lyrics about the COVID-19 omicron variant.

Lyrically, HAIM deliver lines like, “Maya Rudolph lights the menorah/ So does Japanese Breakfast and the Dessner bros do the hora/ Guess who eats together at the famous Canther’s Deli?/ Rashida and Kidada Jones and Eugene and Dan Levy/ Doja Cat’s half Jewish, Chalamet’s half too/ Put ’em both together that’s a fine lookin’ Jew.”
The second verse of their version of “Hanukkah Song” is dedicated to Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, who recently passed away. They also end the video by asking each other the question on everyone’s minds: “Should we go on tour?”
HAIM aren’t the only artists celebrating Hanukkah with their music. Just like they covered “Hanukkah Song,” Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and producer Greg Kurstin have been taking part in their Hanukkah Sessions. In the series, they cover Jewish artists like KISS, Amy Winehouse, Van Halen, and more.
