Where Is Mystic Lake?

Mystic Lake is right up there in the most popular day hikes of the Beartooth Mountains. The lake is huge… it’s 300 feet deep and extends over two miles in length.

Mystic Lake is tucked into Montana’s Yellowstone Country. You’ll find it just north of Yellowstone National Park. A huge plus of this destination as well is that it’s located just under three hours outside of Bozeman. As far as Montana is concerned, this is a short drive… especially when you consider how breathtaking the scenery is.

You won’t believe all of the amazing things you can do at this spot in the mountains. It really does offer it all, from the expansive, inspiring views all the way to the activities you can enjoy there.

The hike at Mystic Lake is the main draw for tourists and locals alike. Start early in the day, because the boulder field heats up in the sun. There are so many trails to enjoy, and the views will keep you motivated. Make sure to take some time out just to take it all in while you’re on your way!

Montana lakes are famous for fly fishing. You’ll find rainbow trout, lake trout, whitefish, and bass in plenty. The chances of getting a bite here are good, but check with the local Fish and Wildlife department to make sure that fishing is open to the public.

The Mystic Lake camp situation is good. While Mystic Lake is open year-round, the best months for camping are from June into September. Most people make this a day-trip, but you’re welcome to pitch a tent. Also, check out Mystic Lake Cabin, which was built in 1930!

Mystic Lake is deep and cold. However, if you’re into that kind of thing… jump in! There are lots of spots to go swimming. If it’s warm out, you can dry off and continue on your hike!

When Is The Best Time To Visit Mystic Lake?

Hands down, the best time to visit Mystic Lake is May until October. However, you’ll want to keep in mind that the weather in this area can change very quickly. Pay close attention to the forecast. Further, you may want to pack rain gear in case you get stuck.
