Giving Tuesday is widely seen as the “opening day of the giving season,” and is a time when charities, companies, and individuals rally together for important causes.

SickKids is currently running its SickKids vs. Limits Campaign, which officially launched in October 2017. The campaign aims to raise a total of $1.5 billion, and so far, SickKids has raised over $1.16 billion from 996,800 donors.

This Giving Tuesday, you can help SickKids reach their goal, which would help support them in building a new SickKids, continuing to invest in research, and forging partnerships to improve child health.

This year, funds raised support programs like Child Life. Child Life specialists aim to make the hospital an easier and less scary place to be by providing therapeutic play, preparing children for medical and surgical procedures, providing emotional support to patients, and more.

“We bring play to patients’ bedsides,” SickKids Child Life specialist Natalie explains. “We celebrate first birthdays and sweet sixteens. We show patients what an MRI is, teach them how to do a nose swab, use candy to help them learn to swallow pills. We play for them if they are not strong enough.”

SickKids was founded in 1875 and was the first children’s hospital in Canada, and now it’s the largest paediatric academic health sciences centre in the country, receiving over 300,000 patient visits each year. One patient is registered in SickKids’ Emergency department every 7 minutes, and every 9 hours a child needs to be resuscitated.
