Having spent over a decade as Montreal’s noir-pop group The Dears’ former guitar player, Patrick Krief is no stranger to melancholic pop tunes. After a string of devastating deaths in his personal life, the multi-instrumentalist songwriter was inspired to compose his own body of work, one which he’s sharing with us today.
Drawing from grief and heartbreak that follows death, Krief dove in deep and came out on the other side with two self-functioning albums, Automanic Red and Automanic Blue. Krief equates Red as a Thursday: optimistic, forward thinking and upbeat, while Blue is Sunday morning: sobering, self-reflective and emotionally undulating.
Both Red and Blue explore a multitude genres and styles; each song unique in instrumentation and mood, while it is Krief’s lyrics that tie together both records as a comprehensive concept.
From Red, “Magdalena” recalls the musician’s familiarity with baroque pop, while “Godspeed” draws from a version of himself set somewhere in the 70s psychedelic rock movement. Song to song, Blue stays closer together thematically, with a heavy influence of Beach Boys-era love songs that’s easily recognized on “This Madness”, and “The Mayan”, a slower jam that could have easily come from the unreleased vault of Pink Floyd.
Krief shared recording duties for all instrumentation with Robert Piccioni. The album features guest vocals by Sam Roberts and Maia Davies, with enginerring done by David Schiffman.
Automanic Red and Automanic Blue is set to release Friday, September 30th, 2016 via Culvert.
