Indie88 Premiere: Ashlynn Malia sings of longing and loneliness on haunting new track ‘Coordinates’

LA indie-pop artist Ashlynn Malia is exploring her acoustic side on her new single “Coordinates,” premiering now on Indie88.

The haunting new song is all about longing and loneliness. “Coordinates” marks Ashlynn Malia’s first new release since her 2021 EP, rather be alone. The single boasts a tender acoustic guitar line as Malia’s heartwrenching vocals take the lead. Alongside the track, she’s released an intimate lyric video that has a nostalgic feel, fitting the track perfectly.

“I wrote coordinates when I was missing someone,” Ashlynn Malia explains. “That was honestly the only thing I had in my head. Just the phrase ‘I miss you’ over and over. I knew better than to reach out, so I put the words here instead.”

Lyrically, Ashlynn Malia delivers lines like, “Woke up wanting you beside me/ I don’t know what else to say/ Ain’t no particular reason/ Just hit by your wave.”

Malia’s vulnerable lyricism stems from using songwriting “as a way to understand how her own mind works,” according to a release. She released her debut EP, rather be alone, on June 25th, 2021. The songs all explore themes of social anxiety and human connections.

“If making those connections means enduring all the overthinking, insecurity, growing pains, abandonment, rejection, questioning my own self-worth, and blurring of my mental vision – then I’d rather be alone where I’m safe from that type of pain,” Ashlynn Malia explains.
