Montreal psych outfit Hippie Hourrah are readying the release of their self-titled debut album on June 11th via Simone Records, and today they’ve shared a video for their new track, “Poupée,” premiering now on Indie88.
“Poupée” is a trippy track with a twangy instrumental line, as Hippie Hourrah take you on a slew of genre-bending twists and turns. The fun-loving video sees Hippie Hourrah as The Wizard of Oz on a Western-themed set, interspersed with shots of a puppet who makes his very own sock puppet.
“For this DIY video (directed by Cédric Marinelli & Marc-André Laurin),” Hippie Hourrah explain, “we wanted to merge different universes: as if the Wizard of Oz had been catapulted onto the wrong set at a second-rate western and the director has said, ‘Screw it, we’ll deal with it. Shut up, everybody, we’re shooting!'”

“I always found it lively or theatrical to make handmade elements move, so it’s a matter of taste and aesthetics,” Marinelli adds. “The story in the song is a bit weird: someone who creates his greatest fantasy with objects and clothes he finds in an apartment. I thought it would be funnier to represent this story with a puppet who makes himself his own sock puppet… and it worked with the name of the song ‘Poupée’ (meaning doll).”
