John DeNicola has made a return with a video for his new single, “She Said,” premiering now on Indie88.
Famous for writing ’80s pop Dirty Dancing hits, “(I’ve Had) the Time of My Life” and “Hungry Eyes,” the 66-year-old producer and songwriter is ready to channel a new sound. While making the new song, John DeNicola was trading sounds and mixes with his 27-year-old musician son, so he had been honing in on the sounds of Tame Impala and Alex G. You can hear that dreamy, psychedelic-tinge on “She Said.” Ultimately, the track is a portrait of a relationship that never comes to fruition.
Created and directed by Anima Works, the accompanying video is shot entirely on film. The cinematic short film comes packed with clips of John DeNicola playing along to the track, interspersed with shots of Debra Svennson DeNicola, John’s wife of 29 years. With moving tableaux of fields, forests, and abstracted rooms, this video feels almost like a surreal dream.

“What she sais in ‘She Said,’ and what DeNicola conjures in the music and montages, is left to interpretation– for art, after all, is meant to be defined by those who experience it,” a press release explains. “Both song and video are a matter of style and substance, passion and possibilities, and the willingness to wonder. The question is: What will ‘She Said’ say to you?”
