Canadian rock mainstay Matt Mays has shared a new video for “Sentimental Sins” from his recent Once Upon a Hell of a Time EP. The pulsating guitar-driven track was one of four songs to appear on the EP, which was a taste of what’s to come on a full-length version arriving on October 20 via Sonic Records/Warner Music Canada/ADA
“Sentimental Sins” serves as a cathartic exercise in letting go for the Nova Scotia-raised singer-songwriter.
“I was in a bit of a rough place,” Mays told Indie88. “A certain level of frustration comes from break-ups and life in general. Everyone has their highs and lows. This one was fairly aggressive. I remember it felt really good to get it off my chest at the time. I feel very lucky that I have this outlet to do that.”

Once Upon a Hell of a Time was produced by Mays and Wintersleep drummer Loel Campbell, whose influence on the recordings is apparent. It’s shaping up to be Mays’ most significant departure from his alt-country-inspired sound since 2006’s conceptual effort When the Angels Make Contact. The forthcoming LP will be Mays’ first since 2012’s Coyote.
