Indie88 Premiere: Stream Young Rival’s ‘Interior Light’

Stream Young Rival's entire energetic new album

Hamilton trio Young Rival have been patiently sitting atop of a musical goldmine since the completion of their highly anticipated LP Interior Light. Today we are happy to be able to share the entire new album with you, ahead of its release this Friday.

For a band that’s been on the scene for nearly a decade, Aron D’Alesio, Noah Fralick and John Smith still haven’t exhausted their seemingly endless pit of energy. After releasing the album’s single “Interior Light” recently, we were given a glimpse into the band’s refined sound: — fuzzed out bass, infectiously catchy west coast inspired guitar hooks and breezy vocals sprinkled with a sense of anxiety.

Despite the momentum accumulated by two critically acclaimed records, Young Rival and Stay Young, Young Rival stood back and evaluated their surroundings before moving onto Interior Light. Refiguring their sound and process, “It was definitely time for us to have a sitdown together and figure things out,” said frontman Aron D’Alesio. Usually when you’re forced to stand back and evaluate, one of two things happen: they either fall apart, or come together stronger than ever. The resulting album is the latter; an exploration in the post-punk revival halls that have housed acts such as Deerhunter, The Walkmen and Grizzly Bear. “We decided to switch things up. Do things differently. Try something new…” and that’s exactly what they did.

That change forced the band look to their own “Interior Light” and direct that powerful energy into tracks like “Elevator” and “Scruples”. Though the fast-moving tracks are paralelled by slow-burning psychedelic-inspired tunes like “Where’s It All Going” and the album’s second released single “That’s Chemistry”.

Check out the entire new album in the player above, which comes out October 16th via Paper Bag Records.
