Australian outfit The Rubens were on their way to Brooklyn to put the finishing touches on their third album when Grammy-nominated songwriter Sarah Aaron had reached out and expressed her desire to write a song with the group.
With Aaron having lent her songwriting abilities to artists like Alessia Cara and Dua Lipa, The Rubens thought that the collaboration could simply end up as a song for another artist. Once they got in the studio together, it became apparent that they were crafting one more track for their own record.
“We actually thought with the album completed we would be writing a song for someone else,” Elliott Margin said in a release. “The main chord structure and melody was something I had been fiddling with for a while but couldn’t find the words or story for. After meeting Sarah and having a chat we got stuck into the song, started throwing ideas around. Pretty quickly we realized it needed to be a duet and from there the story started to take shape.”
