Indie88 Premiere: Toronto synth-rocker TOVI shares new EP ‘Hard Feelings’

Alongside a visualizer for the title track

Toronto synth-rocker Rebecca Emms has shared her new EP as TOVI, Hard Feelings, alongside a visualizer for the album’s title track.

The new four track collection sees Emms teaming up with Toronto producer Josh Korody, with mixing from Mike Lizola Rocha and mastering by Jesse F Keeler. The dreamy new collection weaves in and out of tender instrumentals and explosive melodies, making for a balanced, nuanced set of shoegazey alt-pop tunes.

“There’s this tone of yearning across this group of songs,” TOVI explains. “I was still living back home in Red Deer, Alberta when I wrote the songs for this EP. I think that plays a big part in that feeling. I ended up making a very impromptu move to Toronto while recording this EP. It was time for a change; to expand.”

“This song I call myself out on self-sabotage,” Emms explains of the title track. “I was inspired by this article I stumbled upon. It was talking about people who often find themselves yearning for someone or something that is completely our of their reach, geographically or otherwise. You get to play the victim, you get to avoid change. It made me realize something in me needed to shift.”
