Indoor Recess with Lana: Cinco de Mayo, The Met Gala, and using Danzig as a unit of measurement

Lana is offering up some things to do in these trying times

How’s your day so far? There’s construction starting at 7am across the street now which is filling me with mild early morning rage BUT the silver lining is I’m becoming an early bird and starting to play really loud music with breakfast.

We should all listen to more metal in the morning which leads me to…

Use Danzig as a unit of measurement

If you ever wondered “How many Danzigs is that?” now you have the ultimate tool. Simply enter any measurement to find out. Turns out 32 years is not even 1 Danzig, but 685 meters is 360 Danzigs (rounded down to the nearest whole Danzig.)

If you can somehow incorporate this into homeschooling for your kids, math class just got more interesting.

The real story of Cinco de Mayo (and a cocktail)

Cinco de Mayo seems like a very misunderstood celebration in America and Canada. No, it’s not Mexican Independence Day (that’s in September) or widely celebrated in Mexico. It’s become a reason to drink margaritas and eat guac, sure, but why? Let Xochitl Mayo give you the scoop (plus a margarita recipe.)

Watch

In case you missed it/ don’t have cable, last Thursday’s NBC A Parks and Recreation Special is now online! The reunion saw (almost the full) cast in their homes connecting Zoom style. So far, the special has raised over $3million for Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund.

The Met Gala Online

For the first time in history, the Met Gala was postponed. It’s the largest annual red carpet event, and themed (which is my favourite part.) Vogue attempted to take it online this year, check out what they’ve put together, including retrospects, an address from Anna Wintour and Florence and the Machine performing at home in front of some spectacular wallpaper.

Listen

What might have been missed in the Met Gala video playlist was a new playlist from Swedish pop Queen Robyn. She made one just for the (virtual) occasion.

That’s it for today. If you have some cool things you’ve been checking out and think everyone should know about, feel free to send them over. Tag @lanagay or @indie88toronto

I hope you’re feeling well and taking care over there. And if you need a few more things to keep you occupied in the great indoors, here you go:
