Indoor Recess with Lana: The history of 420, the White Stripes, and more

Hey friend, how are you feeling today? Over the weekend I binged Chef’s Table on Netflix and became one with Miss Vickie’s Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar chips, which I would argue are the superior potato chip. True story: during exams in university I pulled an all nighter and ate two family size bags of chips and drank 5 Diet Cokes and sent a very passionate email of thanks to Miss Vickie’s.

I almost did that again this weekend.

In case every day feels like a Wednesday, just know it is in fact Monday. Let’s start off the week with a new list of things to occupy the time while indoors!

Hey, it’s April 20th… 420. A day associated with weed and cannabis culture. How did 420 come about? Is it the Police code for bustling marijauna users? Nope, a myth!

It goes back to 1971 when five teenagers in Marin County California referred to themselves as the WALDOS. Why the Waldos? Because they were high teenagers, I don’t know.
Read the story of 420, it’s a trip.

Tracks & Tunes

You know I’m going to tell you to listen to Indie88, so please tune in and check in and tell me how you’re feeling, you can call in or text 416-588-0881. I’ll be keeping you informed and entertained 1-5pm.

If you’re a White Stripes fan, Third Man Records recently released season 2 of their podcast Striped. It documents The White Stripes career, but also offers a snapshot of the Detroit scene, and how surviving the industry in the early 2000s was reliant on not just a hefty amount of talent, but luck and timing (I mean, it still is, but then not even technology was on your side.)

One of things I discovered from the podcast is the Rome album. Did you know about this? Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi wanted to create music inspired by spaghetti westerns and within that collab tapped into the talents of Jack White and Norah Jones. What a crew! Read more about it here before checking out the album.

Have a laugh

Comedian Eva Victor’s mockery of the peloton ad really shone a light on her hilarious front facing videos. Why not check out this one to make up for any of the weddings you miss this summer?
