Today’s the last edition of Indoor Recess, thanks for reading these over the past 2 months, a lot has changed in that time. So now, after 48 posts and the ability to leave our houses more regularly, time to wrap!
How’s today going so far? I’m excited the weekend is almost here.
As per usual, I’m on air 1-5pm and will continue to bring you music facts, random stories and the news updates, so tune in and say hi at 416-588-0881.
Watch: the worst way to get rid of a dead whale
In 1970 a 45 foot dead whale washed to shore in Florence, Oregeon. At that time the Highway Division was also responsible for beaches, and guess what they decided was the best way to get rid of the enormous foul smelling dead sperm whale? Blow it up.
Yep, they assumed shoving 20 cases of dynamite into the 8 ton creature would disintegrate it, with whatever small pieces remained to be eaten by scavenger birds.
Watch how that all turned out live during this 1970 news report.
(Hint: chunky, rotten blubber flying for miles.)

Big thanks to Desus Nice for this thread which matches characters from The Golden Girls with their sneaker counterparts. Personally, I would love a pair of Air Devereauxs.
Watch: Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story
The story of Memphis’ Stax Records is one of the most important, and often undertold, stories in modern music. This studio in 1960s Memphis helped break down the racial barriers and discrimination of the time with it’s open door policy and interacial houseband, Booker T and MGs, who would back whoever came in to record. And the music on that label was phenomenal. Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Luther Ingram and more got their start in that little studio that changed the game, soul music, and the Memphis sound.
Merch of the Day
One way you can support your favourite bands and musicians is to buy their music or merch right now. Please show off your favourite band shirts on Band Shirt Friday and spread the love!
I’m going to suggest you check out Chad VanGaalen’s merch, which features his weird and wonderful illustrations.
Don’t forget, if you post a pic wearing your fav band shirt on Instagram (or Instagram stories) and tag @Indie88Toronto with #BandShirtFriday you could win a custom t-shirt or hoodie from Toronto Tees – home of the 5 minute custom shirt.
If you’ve gotten into puzzling during isolation times, PUP also recently released a great 1000 piece puzzle with a new take on their Morbid Stuff cover.
That’s it for me, have a great weekend. Take care of yourself and much love to you and yours! And if you’re looking for more things to check out peruse the archive – there’s a lot in there for ya!
