Disney has elected to bring back writer-director James Gunn to helm the third instalment of its Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel films. Deadline has confirmed that Gunn has been reinstated on the previously delayed film.
Gunn was fired by Disney in July after years-old tweets resurfaced in which Gunn was making jokes about wholly unfunny topics such as pedophilia and rape. Gunn’s tweets led to his removal from the project when alt-right social media personality Mike Cernovich engaged in a bout of concern-trolling with Disney, effectively prompting the company to reconsider its ties to Gunn. Cernovich himself has “joked” about rape in the past, tweeting things like “Date rape does not exist” and worse. Many declared Cernovich’s run at Gunn to be in poor faith.

Before he was fired by Disney, Gunn had written a script for the third Guardians film. No word yet on when the film will go into production.
Disney and Marvel are set to close Phase III of its Marvel Cinematic Universe in April with the release of Avengers: Endgame. While it has not yet been formally announced, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is rumoured to be slated for Phase IV of the series.
