Randy Rajmoolie from Mississauga started a petition on Change.org asking Rogers to change the Rogers Centre name back to the SkyDome or to Rogers SkyDome.
The SkyDome received the iconic name in 1987 after thousands of submissions from people all over Ontario. Rajmoolie said that the name is what made the home of the Blue Jays so unique. He wrote:
“I’ll never forget the first time I went to a Blue Jays game at the SkyDome. It was 1989 and I was 10 years old. My brother had scored us tickets to a Jays/Indians game, and when I walked in to the stadium, I was completely blown away. I’m not sure what I was more excited about – seeing the players who I idolized, or sitting in the huge dome with it’s super cool retractable roof. Even though it was a beautiful sunny day I remember hoping it would rain – just so I could see them close the Dome. It didn’t rain, but lucky for us, they closed the roof at the end of the game. Everyone stuck around to watch.”
The anecdotal story along with the petition is very moving, in fact, so moving that the petition almost has 14,000 signatures. Once the goal of 15,000 is reached the letter will be given to president of Rogers Media Rick Brace and chief brand officer Dale Hooper.
If you want to see the change you can sign the petition and use #OurSkyDome on social media.
