The Closner sisters, also known by their stage name Joseph, have recently shared a cover of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” The hit song was released by Tears For Fears in 1985 via Songs from the Big Chair.
Slowing down Tears for Fears songs has been a popular approach to covers, given the melancholy nature of their lyrics (Michael Andrews and Gary Jules cover of “Mad World” is one of the more popular examples). Joseph’s version of the track follows this direction — it’s ethereal in tone and incorporates the group’s folk roots, which contrasts with the original’s synth new wave sound. Check it out below.
Joseph will be in Toronto to play the Mod Club on Wednesday, September 20.
