Nashville-based folk trio Judah & the Lion broke out with their 2016 genre-bending single “Take It all Back.” The track embodied their approach to songwriting, dubbed “Folk Hop n’ Roll,” combining folk and rock instrumentation with hip-hop production.
The single’s success pushed the band to the top of the Billboard Alternative charts as they set off on their biggest tour yet. But meanwhile, frontman and principal songwriter Judah Akers’ personal life was in turmoil.
As Akers struggled with his family falling apart as a result of divorce, addiction and death, he turned to songwriting as a form of therapy, eventually penning the songs that make up their new album Pep Talks. They joined us in the Indie88 Black Box studio to perform “Over My Head” and “Why Did You Run?” from the album.
