Julia Jacklin shares self-directed video for new indie-pop anthem ‘I Was Neon’

Melbourne singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin is back with a video for her new single “I Was Neon.”

The track comes from her forthcoming album, Pre-Pleasure, out August 26th via Polyvinyl. Today’s release sees Julia Jacklin leaning into an indie pop sound. Boasting some stunning harmonies and a catchy guitar riff, you’ll find yourself revisiting “I Was Neon” again and again. The accompanying video is directed by Jacklin herself and sees her playing along to the track in an old apartment, interspersed with clips of her rocketing down a zipline.

Jacklin first wrote “I Was Neon” for “a band called rattlesnack, a short-lived much loved 2019 side project that I played drums in,” she says. “I rewrote it for my album in Montreal, during a time when I was desperately longing for a version of myself that I feared was gone forever. I was thinking of this song when I made the album cover, this song is the album cover really.”

Serving as the follow-up to 2019’s Crushing, Julia Jacklin started working on PRE PLEASURE when the touring cycle ended. In fact, she finished it during a “frantic few months of recording in Montreal,” she says. “The songs on this record took either three years to write or three minutes.”

In addition to “I Was Neon,” Pre-Pleasure features the previously released single “Lydia Wears A Cross.”

“A lot of the time I feel like I need to do all the work before I can enjoy my life,” Julia Jacklin adds. “Whether that’s work on songs of sex, friendships, or my relationship with my family – I think if I work on them long and hard enough, eventually I’ll get to sit around and really enjoy them. But that’s not how anything works is it. It’s all an ongoing process.”
