“I thought I was gonna make it through this, but I’m not” said Prime Minister Trudeau as he fought back tears speaking about Gord Downie’s death today.
Activist, poet, musician and all-around Canadian everyman Gord Downie passed away from cancer late Tuesday night. Trudeau, visibly shaken, came out to address the news with the press.
“Gord was my friend. Gord was everyone’s friend, it’s who we were. Our buddy Gord, who loved this country with everything he had—and not just loved it in a nebulous, ‘Oh, I love Canada’ way. He loved every hidden corner, every story, every aspect of this country that he celebrated his whole life.”
