Kacey Musgraves took to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night (October 18th) to perform “breadwinner.”
Musgraves delivered a touching rendition of the star-crossed standout during the episode. During the country-tinged performance, money rains down from the ceiling, as Musgraves delivers lines like, “He wants a breadwinner/ He wants your dinner/ Until he ain’t hungry anymore.”
Much like the rest of star-crossed, “breadwinner” is a divorce anthem. Throughout the tune, Musgraves sings about a man who feels intimidated by a more financially successful woman.

Kacey Musgraves is no stranger to epic live performances. Earlier this month, she was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. There, she performed “justified” and “camera roll.” During her performance of “justified,” Kacey Musgraves channeled Jenny Gump. She paid tribute to the Forest Gump scene where Robin Wright performs naked, covered by her acoustic guitar.
While this “breadwinner” performance is a standout, she also performed the album’s title track at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). At the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Musgraves opened her performance with a sparse acoustic arrangement by candlelight. As the slow-burning track began to grow, Musgraves made her way through a slew of neon hearts with a sword through them. The largest heart was aflame, as Musgraves sang along to the brooding tune throughout the VMAs.
That performance marked the live debut of “star-crossed.” The song has a clear reference to Romeo and Juliet, and given Musgraves’ recent divorce, the performance was quite emotional. The brooding tune is a breakup anthem, as Musgraves croons, “Let me set the scene/ Two lovers ripped right at the seams.”
