Toronto prog pop trio Absolutely Free have made their official return with “Currency,” a collaborative track that features U.S. Girls’ Meg Remy.
Remy takes the lead vocals on this tune as her gritty, processed voice takes the forefront atop an energetic post-punk shuffle. “Currency” comes packed with suspense-filled, punchy guitar lines, ambient synths, and a groovy drum beat, making for an explosive disco-influenced tune.
The track explores “how social frameworks like gender performance are built,” the band’s Matt King explains to The Fader. “As a band, we are learning to acknowledge the privilege and power we personally gain from systems such as patriarchy, and are feeling conflicted about how to best use this social capital. We have noticed a lot of white male reactions to this era of intersectional sensitivity have been to stay out of the conversation completely, but this results in music that tends to just operate as ‘music’, and that’s sort of it.”
