The newest installment of “No Fun Mondays” by Billie Joe Armstrong brings us a cover of Kim Wilde’s 1981 hit “Kids in America”. Listen below.
The track is dedicated to Green Day‘s bassist, Mike Dirnt, who’s birthday also happens to be May 4th. “Play this one loud just for him,” Armstrong wrote in the video’s caption on Twitter. The clip also features an animated unicorn bassist with a very strong resemblance to Dirnt.
Wilde’s song was covered earlier by punk rock band, the Muffs. Their version appears in the opening credits of the 1995 comedy, Clueless. Kim Shattuck, the Muffs singer-guitarist, passed away in October at 56 from complications of ALS. Armstrong praised her as a major influence on his work. “She was one of my favourite songwriters,” her wrote. “When we recorded Dookie, we listened to the first Muffs record constantly. We will hear that rock n roll scream from heaven.”
