Listen: Dinosaur Jr share new track ‘I Ran Away,’ announce forthcoming album ‘Sweep it Into Space’

The album was co-produced by Kurt Vile

Dinosaur Jr have announced their 12th full-length album, Sweep it Into Space, which is set for release on April 23rd. As part of the announcement, they’ve shared a laidback new track called “I Ran Away.”

The trio began recording the album in the fall of 2019 alongside co-producer and tourmate Kurt Vile, with the intention of releasing it in mid-2020 until COVID-19 hit. Dinosaur Jr ended up finishing the album during lockdown without Vile, but frontman J Mascis explains that he ended up “mimicking a few things” Vile had began.

The first preview of the collection, “I Ran Away,” features Vile on a 12-string guitar before it moves into some twin-lead instrumentals and a chorus you’ll want to play on repeat.

“I was listening to a lot of Thin Lizzy, so I was trying to get some of that dueling twin lead sound,” Mascis continues. “But the recording session was pretty well finished by the time things really hit the fan. When the lockdown happened in march, that meant I was on my own. But it was cool.”

Sweep It into Space also features Low Barlow’s “Garden,” which the indie rockers premiered at a socially distant show last fall.
