After releasing their own rendition of ABBA’s “S.O.S.,” Toronto’s Dwayne Gretzky have just dropped a reimagined cover of The Cars’ hit track “Just What I Needed.”
Dwayne Gretzky’s rendition is a melancholic, yet silky pop-country hybrid, as the track comes packed with resounding instrumentals and glimmering processed vocal lines.
“‘Just What I Needed’ is a perfect pop song by one of our favourite bands,” bandmember Nick Rose explains in a statement. “We love it so much it was actually the first tune we started messing around with for this reimagined covers album. The jumping off point was treating it like a Paul Simon song, and then sort of letting it evolve from there in the studio. At the time we were digging the new Kacey Musgraves record so that was another sonic influence – leading us into more of a melancholic pop/country world.”

Dwayne Gretzky’s debut album drops on August 23rd, and you can catch the band at the Festival of Beer on July 27th.
