Grimes was Hrishikesh Hirway’s most recent guest this week on his Song Exploder Podcast to break down her Art Angels single “Kill V. Maim”.
Claire Boucher, AKA Grimes broke down the song into single elements and explained how each of them came to be, revealing inspiration came to her to write a song that she “would want to play during an action sequence.”
Boucher delved deeper: “I just had this thought in my mind of this insane movie that would be like The Godfather with vampires.” The interview is interesting not only for the insight provided but also for the rare opportunity to hear the song completed deconstructed.
Though possibly the most intriguing revelation of the breakdown is to what lengths Grimes’ takes to complete her work. The majority of the guitar in the song is “the byproduct of [her] knowing absolutely nothing about guitars” she told Hirway. She then highlighted some of her go-to dance track essentials such as kick drum and the crowd sound effects.
