Lucy Dacus releases reworked ‘Thumbs Again,’ reschedules Toronto and Montreal shows
The earworm of a track comes packed with slowly building, explosive melodies as Dacus’ silky vocals take the lead. Lyrically, Dacus uses a slew of Old Hollywood references to sing of her experiences with a temperamental relationship, delivering lines like, “I’m in a second story window / And you’re yelling at me ‘Stella!’/ And I’m laughing cause you think you’re Brando but you’ll never come close.” Today also kicks off a “Brando” video contest, where participants can send in a video of themselves dancing, skateboarding, roller blading, etc. to lucydacusbrando@gmail.com for a chance to be featured in the official music video for the track.
“‘Brando’ refers to a very dramatic friend I had in high school whose whole personality was the media he consumed,” Dacus explains. “He showed me a lot of amazing movies and music, but I think he was more interested in using me as a scrapbook of his own tastes than actually getting to know me. He claimed to know me better than anyone else but I started to feel like all he wanted from me was to be a scene partner in the movie of his life.”
Listen to “Brando” below.
“Brando” follows the release of singles “VBS,” “Hot & Heavy,” and “Thumbs.”
The forthcoming album, which serves as the follow-up to 2018’s Historian, sees Dacus reflecting on her coming-of-age years in Richmond, Virginia. Serving as almost a memoir, Dacus offers snapshots of specific moments of her growing up, as she was learning about the complexity of emotions and relationships.
