Chris Cummings aka Marker Starling (and Mantler before that) is the best lyricist in Canada. I have been a massive fan of Chris’ ever since hearing his sophomore album Landau just under a decade ago and have been following his career at a near-stalker level ever since. His brand of smooth, yacht pop and lyrics bordering on outsider art have kept me saying “I wish I wrote that” for as long as I can remember. Marker Starling is a songwriter’s songwriter, and I would wager that most of his loyal fans are musicians themselves. While he is barely a blip on the radar of most music fans, his surreal, earnest and completely un-ironic pop confections have become an insider secret among many of my musician friends. If you’re into mind-blowing songwriting that has no ambitions of being cool or trendy, Marker Starling is for you. Too many bands have the image, the label and the support of taste maker blogs and websites only to find themselves fizzling out after a handful of singles because they forgot the most important thing a band needs: the songs.
I strongly suggest you check out the albums Landau and Monody by Mantler while we wait for the new Marker Starling album in 2014.
