Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel is coming out with their newest Bob Wills tribute album, Still the King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, March 3rd. This album’s especially noteworthy because they invited several other artists to join them, including Willie Nelson, the Avett Brothers, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
Yesterday, Asleep at the Wheel released one of the tracks off the upcoming tribute album, “Tiger Rag”, which features Old Crow Medicine Show. OCMS frontman Ketch Secor says:
“What made Bob Wills the ‘King of Western Swing’ was his pioneering fusion of the driving rhythm of jazz and a wild, melodious and highly original strain of country fiddling. Mixed together and shook up, this new, purely American genre rocked the dance halls on the far side of the Mississippi just as fiercely as rhythm and blues did the juke joints over on the other bank.”
In reference to the song, Secor says: “‘Tiger Rag’ is no mere pussycat. She’s a hillbilly hellcat, busted loose and ready to pounce.”
