Listen: Sleater-Kinney and R.E.M. share new song as supergroup Filthy Friends, announce album

'Emerald Valley' is set for release on May 3

Supergroup Filthy Friends, featuring Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, will be releasing a new album called Emerald Valley. As part of the announcement, the group has released a new track called “Last Chance County.”

“Last Chance County” sees Tucker singing about feeling down and out as Buck plays along with raucous, demanding riffs atop heavy drum beats. “It’s about a teenage girl riding the bus through a depressed Northwest town in the 1980s, a version of myself and the frustration I saw there,” Tucker explained to the Rolling Stone. “Riding the bus to work, I saw people struggling to make ends meet and make sense of their lives. It’s disheartening that 30 years later, the struggle for working people might be even greater.”
