Listen: Sufjan Stevens shares ‘Meditation V,’ announces forthcoming five-volume album ‘Convocations’

'Convocations' is set for release on May 6 via Asthmatic Kitty

Sufjan Stevens has announced a new five-volume project called Convocations, which is set for release on May 6th via Asthmatic Kitty. The forthcoming two-and-a-half-hour, 49-track collection is made up of Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations, and Incantations.

Today, Stevens has previewed the collection with a new track called “Meditation V,” and the ten track volume Meditations drops this Thursday, April 8th. “Mediations” comes packed with a dynamic instrumental lives, that weaves in and out of a sort of melancholic grown and a growing sense of intimacy.

Stevens wrote and recorded Convocations in 2020 to pay tribute to his father, who died just two days after the release of Stevens’ last album, The Ascension, in September. The five volumes are set to each explore different parts of Stevens’ grieving process, including loss, isolation, and anxiety.

Alongside the album, a longform generative video art piece by Mexican artist Melissa Fuentes is set for release as well, and volumes of Convocations will drop weekly.
