After releasing Meditations last week, the first volume of his five-volume album, Convocations, Sufjan Stevens is previewing the second volume, Lamentations.
The new track, “Lamentations II,” is more discordant than the tracks on Meditations. Where Meditations was soft and emotional, Lamentations seems to be more challenging and clanging, with droning beeps and scrambled instrumentals.
The forthcoming two-and-a-half-hour, 49-track collection is made up of Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations, and Incantations. Stevens wrote and recorded Convocations in 2020 to pay tribute to his father, who died just two days after the release of Stevens’ last album, The Ascension, in September. The five volumes are set to each explore different parts of Stevens’ grieving process, including loss, isolation, and anxiety.
Listen to “Lamentation II” below.
Convocations is set for release in full on May 6th via Asthmatic Kitty, and Lamentations will drop this Friday.
